Course Description: The American Canoe Association (ACA) has one of the best established instruction programs anywhere in the world. The courses are comprehensive, but allow enough flexibility for individual teaching and paddling styles. The main benefit to taking the course is improving your understanding of paddling technique and theory, so you can paddle more efficiently and teach more effectively. A secondary benefit is the development process which can give you structured feedback on how you sit as an instructor. Of course, the insurance, liability, and networking benefits are significant if you choose to pursue certification.

Instructor Trainer Kent Ford: Kent's unique background includes twenty years of international racing and coaching, combined with similar experience teaching recreational boating to all levels of paddlers. His twenty videos and books on paddlesports have influenced the education of half a million paddlers. Complete bio at http://www.performancevideo.com/kent_ford

Level 3 River Canoe IDW/ICE:
This is a instructor development workshop and an instructor certification exam IDW/ICE. This course is targeted at moving water and whitewater, and the certification offered is River Canoe Level 3. One aspect of the ACA course is that your teaching will be evaluated. You will be assigned topics, like those you will be presenting to your students (how to do a stroke, how to do a maneuver, how to reduce risks, etc.) Simply by watching other presentations you will learn a lot about the sport and about teaching.

Instructor Updates: Current ACA instructors may join the update to fulfill every 4 year update requirements for Whitewater (Level 4), and also to upgrade from L3 to L4.

Prerequisite Skills: Class II-III paddling skills are required. You may wish to study Kent Ford’s Solo Playboating, Drill Time, and SP Workbook for stroke mechanics and techniques.

Pre-course Assignment: Review instruction section of the ACA website, including course registration and reporting, course outlines, and insurance information.

Additional Fees: Instructor candidates must pay ACA membership and Instructor (SEI) fees ($65). Bring receipt and ACA number to class. Participants are expected to provide their own boats and gear.

Overall Health: Participants should be in good physical health. The course runs long hours, with very little free time. It is good fun and invigorating learning. Roughly half of our time is spent in “classroom”, and half out on the river or lake. We will spend some time utilizing slalom training as part of our coursework.

Meals: You will be responsible for all of your own meals. Please pack a lunch for each day plus any snacks you need to get you through the day. These days can be long and cold, so eat accordingly. We often eat lunch on the river, so if you can pack your food in a small dry bag please do so. Also, don’t forget a water bottle.

Cancellations: NOTE: The ACA L3 certification requires a class registration of 5 people (ACA rules), by 7 days prior to the class.  A full refund less a $25.00 processing fee will be given for cancellations if notice is received more than 30 days before the course start date. A 50% refund will be given for cancellations received within 15-29 days prior to the course start date. No refunds will be given for cancellations received within 14 days of the course start date. If we cancel the course for any reason, then a full refund will be made.
